Rodgers and Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA!
Oklahoma! was the first collaboration of Rogers & Hammerstein and is recognized as the show that changed the American musical forever. Before its premiere performance in New York, almost everyone connected with the show thought it would be a box-office disaster because it had no "stars, gags, or humor and lacked the sex appeal of chorus girls in flimsy attire." After the New York opening, the line was revised to read: "No Girls, No Gags, No Tickets" because the audience had been held spellbound as a result of the surpassing beauty, freshness and imagination of the production. Several critics described it as "folk opera."
