Into the Woods is an award-winning musical that premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera.
David Hsieh describes Into the Woods as "a musical fairy tale in which Jack, of beanstalk fame; Little Red Rindinghood; Cinderella, Rapunzel and their respective princes; Sleeping Beauty; Snow White - and, of course, a wicked witch and a menacing giant - are living out their stories in the same forest at the same time, bumping into each other and entangling one another's narratives."The central idea is that everyone has to journey into the woods to get what they desire in Act One, but after getting what they wished for, they have to journey back into the woods in Act Two to sort out the problems created as a result of getting their wishes.

William Henry from Time Magazine wrote "Into the Woods is the best show yet from the most creative mind in the musical theatre today. It is also that joyous rarity, a work of sophisticated artistic ambition and deep political purpose that affords nonstop pleasure."
On the surface, Into the Woods is an entertaining blend of some of the world's most beloved fairy tales set to the magnificent music of Stephen Sondheim - but like all the best fairy tales, it contains light and darkness, becoming a metaphor for our own personal journey in life: what paths we take, what wishes we make and ultimately what we discover along the way in regards to love, loss, values, choices and responsibility.
